Baron Davis Writes GlobalGrind.com A Letter

Wanted to share this with my blog family. Taken From Here http://globalgrind.com/content/492681/Xilla-Blog-A-Letter-From-Baron-Davis/

What's up Global Grind this is your boy BlogXilla, and I got a treat for you. Baron Davis has wrote a letter to the audience of globalGrind.com it's about Gang Violence in America. Check it out. ~ BlogXilla

Dear globalGrind,

On game night, thousands of fans come to watch my teammates and I play ball at the Staples Center. We have fun playing, you all have fun watching, and it's a good time for everyone.

But just a few miles away - where I grew up - there's a war going on in the streets.

Gang violence has become an accepted part of life in South Central LA, taking the lives of so many young black men. The feud between the Crips and Bloods has been going on for decades, but no one seems to understand why.

That's why I've gotten involved with the documentary titled Crips and Bloods: Made in America. This film gives an amazing look inside LA's gang life -- the turf wars, the gang structure, the street rules, and the culture of guns and death. It's told by former gang members, experts, and activists who know first-hand the destruction that gang violence brings to black communities in LA.

I grew up in South Central, and I hate seeing so many other young black men getting caught up in this cycle of gang violence. A basketball scholarship and strong support from my grandmother helped me break through, but most guys aren't so lucky.

It doesn't have to happen like this. Young men don't have to end up in prison or die in the streets. The Crips and Bloods don't have to keep fighting for another 40 years. But to stop the bloodshed, we have to understand why it's happening.

Crips and Bloods: Made in America is a great start. The film doesn't just document the violence in South Central, it helps explain the bloodshed and offers hope that the next generation of kids can escape it. After watching this film, I believe the day will come when neighborhoods in LA aren't run by gangs and rattled by gunshots.

The U.S. just swore in its first black president. There's hope throughout the U.S. -- even in South Central.

Check out the trailer and then ask your friends to watch it too:

A Film Written By Tupac

Lisa Hobbs at Vibe reports that a film written by the Late Tupac Shakur is set to hit theaters. Besides scribbling lyrics, and detailed poems, the late rapper, actor and activist Tupac Shakur also penned several screenplays before his 1996 murder. One of the scripts, Live 2 Tell, is set to hit theaters by 2010. Live 2 Tell revolves around an ex-drug dealer attempting to get his life back on track after escaping a violent past. Shakur wrote the film while serving out his 1995 prison term for sexual assault. He had plans to play the leading role. Shakur’s mother and estate-holder, Afeni Shakur, sold the rights of the film to Insomnia Productions. According to Allhiphop.com, the film is set to be produced by Hustle and Flow producer Preston Holmes. Casting is reported to begin by early April. I think Afeni needs to hold on to all the Pac's material, besides that he had dreams of releasing and those films his-self so instead of her selling his stuff she needs to be looking for investors or getting distribution and trying to maintain ownership.

Keri Hilson..Who?

I haven't posting in a while been kinda busy trying to get my portfolio site and everything else together. I got stuck working on a web design for a client and starting reading crunktastical.net and when I saw the YouTube clip of the day I knew I had to post it. Excuse some of the language, but this is hilarious.

The Truth About Facebook

I saw this on the Streetknowledge blog and it had me scared this is crazy and I knew I little about their policies and procedures but I didn't know it was like this. Taken from streetknowledge.wordpress.com: This is a visual presentation of a story we ran the other day about Facebook acquiring perpetual ownership over everything its users post on its platform. Scary when you think about some of the things I’ve read about people on the ‘Book. Furthermore this video provides the links that track back the investment money to government agencies whose sole interest is to gather as much information on folks as possible, thus establishing motive for claiming ownership over everything people put on Facebook. Sh*t, they might actually be responsible for that annoying “25 Things…” viral thread that’s all over Facebook.

The New Cool

Last night I was reading some blogs on globalgrind.com and a came across a post written by Kevin Liles. If you don't know who Kevin Liles is he's the Executive Vice President of Warner Music Group which is only the largest independent music content company in world. Not only Kevin Liles legendary in the music industry, I mess wit him because he started off as intern at Def Jam Records, and grinded his way to the top. And when I read his entry, I was instantly inspired, and I wanted my people to read it.

Hey, I wanted you guys to read where my head is for 2009. You can check out the full article in the “Executive Decision” column of XXL’s March 2009 issue.

It wouldn’t be me if I didn’t remind each of you that there are 3 kinds of people: people who Make It Happen, people who Watch it Happen and people that Things Happen to. What kind of person are you?

It’s 2009, and, as they say, out with the old and in with new. What old are you getting rid of, and what new are you taking with you? Your past has passed. You lived it, and I hope you learned from it. 365 days of countless new experiences, new conversations, new revelations and new inspirations.

Just in case you didn’t know, Jeezy made it clear: Our President is Black. Not of Black America, but of the United States of America. Queen Latifah reminded us to put “Ladies First,” and now, in 2009, Michelle Obama is our First Lady, carrying with her the soul of Mary J. Blige and the grace and spirit of Beyonce Knowles. Lil Wayne showed us how to still sell “A Milli,” not by just being a rapper, but by making rap his life. T.I. encouraged you to “Live Your Life”, not someone else’s life, taking responsibility for mistakes and evolving into a better man and public
servant.

Will Smith inspired us all to say, “I Am Legend,” and pushed us all to focus on our own “Pursuit of Happyness”. Puffy said “I Am King,” therefore I can do anything; I am what I believe myself to be. And Russell Simmons continues to remind us to relax our minds and let our consciousness be free. Jay-Z reminded us that Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther King Jr. could
march. King marched so that Barack Obama could run. Obama ran so we all could fly.

So spread your wings and fly, because this year there can be no more excuses. Obama’s road to the White House embodied the spirit of Hip-Hop. He encouraged change when some said things were unchangeable. He believed when most said, “You are unbelievable.” He achieved when everyone said it was unachievable. We must all step up, step out on faith, find our will and make it happen. President Obama’s thrill of victory has inspired me to encourage “The New Cool.”

The New Cool is to be presidential: walk presidential, talk presidential and act presidential. No matter what you do, where you are in your life; through crisis, frustration, aggravation, good, bad or sad times. Carry yourself presidential. Dare to dream the big dream and work hard to be an agent of change.

In honor of Black History Month, please celebrate and pray for those who made history before us, and continue to encourage and inspire young America to make their own history after us. The New Cool embodies faith, education, wealth and legacy. I will always encourage you to do you, with one condition: Adopt the New Cool...Be presidential.

God Bless Hip-Hop and God Bless America,

Kevin Liles

New Penny Released Today

Today is President Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday today and the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent, the U.S. Mint will issue four new 1-cent coins. The first will go into circulation today. The rest will be released in each calendar quarter throughout the year. The heads side will bear Lincoln’s likeness. The tails side will have one of four designs depicting aspects of his life. They should have made it out of real copper to honor the man, but wait if they did that it would be worth something.

Get Over It

Monday Shepard Fairey’s attorneys–the Stanford’s Fair Use Project and a San Francisco law firm–wasted no time, filing suit against the Associated Press over the artitst’s re-purposing of a photograph taken by Mannie Garcia while on assignment for the news agency. Garcia has said:

I would see the artwork, I would photograph it, and think what is with this image? But it didn’t snap. It never occurred to me it was my picture. I thought, ‘that’s familiar.’ …

The San Jose Mercury New reports that Garcia says he never signed an explicit photography contract with the AP and that they hired him for just one month. He adds:
"I feel very proud that I made the photograph. I never would have imagined that it became what it is, and it’s pretty cool. The AP is being very aggressive with Fairey, and I don’t want to be a part of that. My last conversation with the AP was that I own the copyright, and that’s what I’m maintaining." Last week the Associated Press issued a statement saying they had determined that the photograph used in the poster is an AP photo and that its use required permission. The news agency sought credit and compensation (duh) for the use of the image. Hundreds of thousands of the “Hope” version were given away for free by Fairey’s studio as part of grassroots campaigning, while other versions became official Presidential Inaugural Committee merchandise and fine art prints. A different version of Fairey’s image was used on the cover of TIME magazine and a large print hangs in the National Gallery. Fairey received a thank you letter from Barack Obama during the campaign. The Associated Press needs to get over this its not even really there image, the photographer has the rights to it and if he is cool with it why shouldn't they be. It's art work, and I feel like the AP is just trying to capitalize on Shepard Fairey, Get Over It!

It was quite a moment at the end of President Obama's town hall meeting in Fort Myers, Fla., yesterday. As The News-Press writes, 19-year-old Julio Osegueda "rocketed from a Cape Coral teenager who flips burgers for $7.85 an hour at a McDonald's to an instant celebrity of sorts." And he got a temporary job. Why did Obama tell the boy you thought I pointed to you but I didn't, that's funny.

Let me introduce my man FLO, Myspace bio reads "No Hype, Just Facts! It seems there are very few artists you come across nowadays as having “that thing”. The thing that I’m speaking of has what few rappers these days posses: true charisma, heart, posture, a brain of consciousness, skills, talent, relevance, substance, continuity, tone, oh yea and of course, FLO! I want to introduce you to an artist who, at first listen, is automatically and irrevocably known to assist with the revolution of the current urban music scene." This my dude right here, we connected on Twitter which lead me to listen to his music and I was hooked. I had his myspace playlist going like the whole day while I worked one day, I don't know it's just something about his joints they just got a fresh sound. And he comes across as a regular cat who can just FLO, you won't catch him rapping about what he don't have, or what he didn't do..

The President's Mind Reader

When Barack Obama steps up to the podium to deliver his inaugural address, one man standing anonymously in the crowd will be paying especially close attention. Jon Favreau, 27, is, as Obama himself puts it, the president's mind reader. He is one of the youngest chief speechwriters on record in the White House, and, despite being of such tender age, was the lets just say master mind who came up with the content of Obama's Inauguration speech. I feel that the arise to prominence of our first Black President was largely built upon his powers as an orator(I like that word), Obama is well versed in the arts of speech-making though and it's like he can always deliver that "amen" line. But the inauguration speech had to out do all of the ones before.
And I was reading this about Jon Favreau and how he has helped Barack with his speeches and before reading it I would have gave all of that credit to Obama but it seems their are several people who should be thanked for that great inauguration day speech and all the others. I wonder if Martin Luther King Jr. had a chief speechwriter? Nah(shaking head) you think? Read More Here.

The Game vs Snoop Dogg In Celebrity Basketball

I don't know who they were playing against but it looks like they can play a little bit, I didn't know my Uncle Snoop had moves like that.. Plus the halftime show with the high school band performance is hot, I always enjoy seeing our youth perform. Anytime I see rappers doing positive, it's getting posted on my blog, because you can see the negative on all your other favorite blogs.

Just For Kicks

This is one of the most unique pairs to drop so far in 2009. This is a pair of extremely limited Nike Flight Lite High part of the White Men Can’t Jump Pack. This is a very unique pair that is limited to less than 72 pairs. This pair of shoes will not be made available any where else but Osneaker.com.

Kanye recently had the shoes he designed for Louie Vutton featured in there show during Fashion Week. A dream come true for Mr. West, and these are kinda hot, maybe if somebody I know wins the Publishing House, I might have some money to grab a pair when they are available in June.

Celebrating this 60 years in the game Adidas is releasing this orginal colorway of their Adidas Top Ten sneaker. I remember I had these in high school one of my favorite Addidas of all time, they're super fresh and mad comfortable to hoop in.

Benjamin Baxby?

I recently found out that Andre Benjamin bka Andre 3000 just launched his Benjamin Bixby clothing line a little over four months ago. Unfortunately for him, his timing was all wrong, the high-fashion but high-priced concept was launched at the start of one of the worst economic recessions in U.S. history. Although Andre’s clothing line is for the most part fashionable and hip, and I would rock some of his stuff but y'all know times is hard right now and who is going to pay $275 for a Benjamin Bixby sweater vest when we can barely afford to pay the rent and feed our kids? And even if you CAN afford it…you might think twice about copping that new Benjamin Baxby.

WoooHa.com exclusively reports that the Benjamin Bixby clothing line is facing severe financial hardships due to limited sales and excess inventory. Because Andre Benjamin paid so much attention to detail, his clothing line was not cheap to reproduce on a mass scale. Instead, limited quantities of the collection were made and sold primarily online through luxury fashion sites such as Barneys.com. The problem is no one is buying the clothing line because of the high price point and no brand equity. As a result, the Benjamin Bixby clothing line has had to dramaticly drop prices in order to move inventory and prevent retailers from shipping it all back to Mr. Benjamin. Read More HERE

Lets Invest In Our Children

This is soo dope! I am amazed everyday by some of the talents and abilities that the youth have today, it's like they're little robots that can do anything they see or hear(crazy). Check out 11-Year-Old Vohn Beatz Making A Beat In His Room, and if you have children, make sure you tell them that they can do anything they want, the possibilites are limitless, all it takes is a little practice and hard work. So, lets invest in our children!!

Ok I Guess

I really want to stay away from posting celebrity gossip on this blog, but it's like every site I visit somebody is exploring the lives of the famous, and who really cares. But when I saw this I knew I had to post it, we need to discuss this, because I'm confused. Why in the hell would Lisa Bonet name her second child with husband Jason Momoa, Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa. And I like Lisa Bonet, I love her organic style but damn, and then Jason's mom attempted to give an explanation via his website: "He was born on the stormiest, rainy night, so Nakoa (warrior)...Mana(strength/spirit) Kaua (rain) po (dark)...." she wrote. "The name was always going to be Nakoa-Wolf, but Jason did the research on first [and] middle name. [The] 2nd middle name, as you know, is Jason's." Ok I understand all of that, cool a very meaningful name, but this kid better be one hell of a speller.

Photos of the Day

Kanye on the Feburary cover of Vibe

I saw this floating around on a few blogs today. I guess people who voted for McCain don't break the law?

The iPhone Killer

You seen it here first this is the new Pre made by Palms, due on Sprint in the first half of this year, no pricing yet): It's got a big, 3.1-inch 480 by 320 touch display (yes, with multitouch and an accelerometer), weighs in at 4.8 ounces, and comes with a curved, slide-out keypad. Yes, it does Wi-Fi and 3G (EV-DO Rev. A, to be exact), as well as GPS (with turn-by-turn directions courtesy of TeleNav), stereo Bluetooth, 8GB of internal storage, a 3MP camera, a 3.5mm headset jack, and a removable battery. But the key to the Pre is its OS, and WebOS—previously code-named "Nova"—is one of the hottest mobile platforms I've seen yet, rivaling both Android and Apple's iPhone OS. One of the new features that I think is hot is WebOS's way of letting you handle and sort all your open applications like a deck of cards, so like if you're sending out an email or something you can open up your contacts or any other app and then add content or get back to the email at anytime(now that's hot). I was aroused lol while reading the features, because WebOS also introduces a concept dubbed "Synergy," which all applications can continuously get info from the Web. The best example: WebOS's unified contact list, which seamlessly displays all your contacts and grab their e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and IM handles from Facebook, Gmail, Exchange, you name it(nasty). That's enough to make me say eff T-Mobile and that Fav 5 plan.

Today In Stupid News?

I was reading the news on Yahoo, which I pretty much do everyday. Today I read 2 articles that had me thinking WTF, and I had to share them.

The first one is just real stupid, some dude found out his bright idea wasn't so bright.

Both articles via Associated Press

Ark. funeral home no haven for meth lab
WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – A funeral home might be a place for eternal rest, but police say an Arkansas man saw an opportunity to build a methamphetamine lab undisturbed by the living.

There was just one problem — the funeral home was across the street from the sheriff's office.

Officers say Robert Lee Lewis left the light on in the basement of the Higginbotham Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge on Dec. 3. Officers noticed the light on after hours and walked into the funeral home through an open door.

Inside, police say they found all the components necessary to build a meth lab. Officers arrested the former funeral home employee when he returned.

The 43-year-old faces several drug charges and is free on $2,500 bond pending a Jan. 21 court hearing.

And this one I found to be real interesting, these kids are really special. My first thought was "what were the consequences if they would have been late?"

RI boys accused of stealing car to get to school
WOONSOCKET, R.I. – Two Woonsocket High School boys did the right thing by trying to get to school on time. It was the way they got there that police had a problem with. Police told The Call of Woonsocket the boys ages 15 and 16 stole a car Tuesday morning in order to make it to school on time.

Police received a call about a stolen vehicle at about 7:44 a.m.

John Raymond, an officer assigned to the school, found the vehicle in the parking lot.

After questioning some students, he identified two boys he thinks arrived in the car. One was located in class, and the other was in the in-house suspension room with the stolen car's keys in his pocket.

The boys, whose names were not released because they are juveniles, are charged with motor vehicle theft.

What Ever Happen To??

The other night I was having a conversation with @ TalkHoops on Twitter and the name Khalid El-Aim came up, and instantly I was like wow what happened to my boy. He is my all time favorite college basketball players, might be one of my all time favorite guards at that. I definitely identified with him as a player, because he was a short stocky dude, who had mad handles, super quick and played with a lot of heart. So you know I had to Google him right, and what I found made me smile and I was real happy to see he was doing good(well: if you're reading mom). Khalid is now playing for the Azovmash Mariupol of the Ukrainian basketball league, and I believe they just won a championship and he was MVP of the league. He has his own website www.elaminbasketball.com were he promotes his camps and personal training services. And go figure the kid they always called "chubby" on the court has his own restaurant.

Classic Of The Day

This was my stuff right here, one of the only albums I could listen to back in the day cause it wasn't nay cussing on it and Shaq never got the props he deserved as a MC. That whole cd was rocking, and still is today. "Who's gonna stop me, from being outstanding?"

Yeaah A Economic Stimulus Is On The Way

Taken From Associated Press
WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama describes the economy as "bad and getting worse." He's been on Capitol Hill today, meeting with House and Senate leaders to talk about an economic stimulus plan. Before meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Obama told reporters, "We have to act and act now," in order to break what he called the "momentum of this recession." Obama earlier met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He said he went to Capitol Hill ahead of his inauguration because "the people's business cannot wait." My only question is that what people are he talking about exactly, because I owe the IRS and they took my last stimulus lol. Second, exactly how does he plan to stimulate the economy, cause I got an idea hit ya boy off wit a little bit of that grant money, and I'll provide for the people.

Lupe Fiasco Now A British Rocker Named Percival Fats?

Ok we asked for more originality in Hip Hop, but damn don't everybody go get all wierd on us.. I don't know, check it out for yourself..

I wanted to post some of the albums that I think didn't get enough play in 08, so to all my people if you slept I'm definitely put you on right now.

#1. Little Brother "And Justus For All" I don't think they ever get the credit they deserve, and this album was hot.

#2. Gnarls Barkley "The Odd Couple" They bounced right back from crazy, I'm Going On was my ish and it's one of those albums you can just let play.

#3. 88 Keys "The Death Of Adam" This is definitely what I would play when I needed to take a break from that Jeezy. My man Eighty Ocho is on some different ish, and is differently a fresh, creative artist. Dirty Peaches and Stay Up Viagra w/ Kanye be rocking.

#4. QTip The Renaissance I hope yall didn't sleep on this one in 08 we were blessed to have The Abstract release an album and it was hot another cd I would put on and let play all the way through. My favorite song on there is the one with him and Norah Jones Life Is Better.

And last I would have to give it to Anthony David "Acey Duecy" there was like at least 4 tracks on here that I would dedicate to my boo. Anthony David be holdin it down for the fellas on the R&B side, and he don't be on no I'm Put You To Bed or I Can't Live Without You type ish, he's a real soulful dude. Definitely a must hear, even Michelle Obama said she had this in her Ipod.

Starting Off The New Year, I Want Everybody To Know That..

"We are the children of those who chose to survive."
-Nana Poussaint in Daughters of the Dust

If you ever doubted your ability to survive look at who you came from. Don't limit yourself to parents and grandparents, go all the way back to the root. In your family line is the genius of those who were born into a barren land and built the pyramids. In the oasis of your mind is the conscience of those who charted the stars, kept time by the sun and planted by the moon. In the center of your being is the strength of those who planted crops, toiled in the fields, and banqueted on what others discarded. In the light of your heart is the love of those who bore the children who were sold away only to one day hang from a tree. In the cells of your blood stream is the memory of those who weathered the voyage, stood on blocks, found their way through the forest and took their case to the supreme court. With all that going on for you what are you worried about. We are the children of those who chose to survive. I move in the power of a mighty past.

Happy New Year!! 08 Was beautiful, I learned a lot and grew even more to sum it up I'M GETTIN GROWN..

This is the perfect song to explain some of my current thoughts and feelings.."times changed but it feels the same, there's no telling what tommorow will bring
even if i could i wouldn't change a thing
lord i know i'm not here to stay but thanks for waking me up today
prepare me for what may come my way
say young man, there's no need to cry, cause i know we will get by
look your dysnasty in the eye
see everyday my heart burns to try, we gotta walk before we learn to fly
and we all gotta earn to die"
